The Semiotics of Feet

I did a post on 'The Semiotics of Armpits' on 20 Sept 06. I'd noticed mainstream advertising had tapped into the the pink dollar, with images of the erogenous zone that had previously not dared to speak its name, at least outside its fetish circles:

Suddenly, no-one seemed to be able to stop themselves doing the single or double armpit 'salute':

Travis Frimmel

Ashton Kutcher

Beiron Andersson

I've now noticed that feet are given a certain prominence in mainstream non-art photography that is beyond just being there cos the guy is naked or whatever. As in these celebrity and advertising shots:

And in gay porn, a set of of erotic photos nowadays seems to require a 'foot' shot/s. At times, with almost an invasion of the camera lens :

I wonder if this one-time fetish site is now being transmuted into a more gay mainstream erogenous zone?

What do you think?

  6. Having worked in the "gay porn" industry in the '90s, I can confirm that the industry is gradually waking up to gay men's interest in feet--an interest so widespread I'm not sure it really qualifies as a "fetish." Before the '90s, men's feet were rarely shown in magazine layouts and only by chance in videos. Our readers (at my magazine) let us know they wanted more feet. They seem to have let everybody else know, too. Now, smart photographers and videographers make a point of keeping the feet in view, as Corbin Fisher and all the rest demonstrate.

  7. yeah keith - this follows gay publishing's discovery of the male armpit as an erotic zone. it's even hard to find a mainstream women's magazine that hasn't at least one example of the single or double armpit salute!
