Contemplative Moment

Just a well-put-together photograph - formally, in terms of lighting, and in subject matter. Straight-forwardly well done photography - certainly not breaking any new ground technically or otherwise.

The forms of the guy are in such beautifully resolved balance. And not in an obvious way. One leg is folded in and the other out-stretched. One hand over his right calf, the other lying beside his left, just a finger connecting the two. A slight contraposta of the shoulders, like that invented by the Greeks for the standing male nude - one leg straight and weight-bearing, the other slightly bent and relaxed. Leaving the hips at an angle to the ground, tilted, rather than parallel. Like with the shoulders here.

School of Praxiteles Marathon bay 325-300 B.C.

The lighting is from the right, and caresses his body, and gently defines its forms.

And the content (the guy's contemplative/reflective mood) is reinforced by the composition - the turn and position of the head to the body, and the downward gaze.

Blah blah blah ... and what a cute muscly guy!
